CFC Gunner
As the Central Fire Control gunner on Crew 4, 60th Squadron, piloted by Ralph Gray, T/Sgt Richard W. Robinson trained with the crew at Salina Smoky Hill Air Force Base in early 1944 before moving on to a month of additional training in Cuba. They traveled from Sacramento, California, to Hawaii, and then to Guam via Johnson Island and other stops. Upon arrival in Guam, they encountered primitive conditions, with no mess hall, limited food, and inadequate bathing facilities. Despite these hardships, they carried out 15-hour missions to Japan, dealing with flak, barrage balloons, enemy fighters, and engine failures, while facing the threat of execution if they had to bail out over Japan.
They completed 12 missions over Japan and additional ones over bypassed islands, though these were not credited.
After practicing law in Miami, Florida, for 23 years, Robinson fulfilled his dream of moving to Alaska and settled in Homer on the Kenai Peninsula. At 81, he runs a business in Homer with rental stores and 86 mini storage units called Downtown Mini Storage. His family includes a son who leads a group of seven lawyers, a daughter in Boulder, CO, and another daughter in Punta Gorda, FL.
Richard Robinson took his Final Flight on 30 November 2013.
