Radar
2nd Lt. Hollis Logan, who served as a radar operator, was assigned to the 29th Bomb Group and later to the 315th Bomb Wing at Northwest Field, Guam, after the 39th Bomb Group disbanded. Following a period of minimal activity and maintenance duties, he traveled to Saipan and then returned home on the Merchant Marine ship Cape Mendocino, arriving in San Francisco in late May 1946. He was released from service at Fort Leavenworth in July 1946, retaining his Reserve commission.
Logan resumed his education, enrolling in law school and graduating in June 1949. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from KSU in 1951. Recalled for the Korean Conflict in September 1951, he served with the Military Air Transport Command, later the Military Airlift Command.
In a memorable encounter, Hollis met his old Airplane Commander, Dick Brinck, in the 1950s at Kirkland AFB. Both recognized each other despite the years and Brinck’s transition to flying B-52s. Hollis noted that while he kept in touch with some of his old crew, he had lost contact with most of them, including his pilot, Davis.
After retiring from the Air Force, Hollis practiced law with a focus on Public Utility Law and ventured into the TV cable business, successfully building small city systems. Following disagreements with partners, he sold his interests and fully retired.
Hollis married Maxine in September 1943, between his Navy resignation and his Army Air Corps service. He enjoyed a varied military career, including roles as a drill instructor, trombonist in a marching and dance band, aircraft inspector, dispatcher, and pre-flight and navigation school student.
He took his Final Flight on 19 January 2017.
