Crew 18

60th Squadron
1st Lt William James Dess

Pilot

After separating from service in September 1947, I was recalled in April 1951 and established Field Maintenance in Aviano, Italy, in April 1955. Returning to the U.S. in June 1958, I served as Field Maintenance Officer at Castle Air Force Base, Merced, before transferring to HQ 15th Air Force in Riverside, CA. From 1964 to 1966, I served as an advisor to the Republic of Korea Air Force Depot, followed by a position as Chief of the Maintenance Section at the USAF Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson AFB, Fairborn, OH, from 1966 to 1968. I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel on June 30, 1969, and returned to Sacramento, CA. After retiring from the Air Force, I worked for Parks and Recreation and later the Forestry Division of the State of California, retiring from state service in July 1989.

I married Mary Emily Proctor on August 28, 1944, at Geneva Army Air Base. We have five children: Jay (1946), Greg (1948), David (1953), Nancy (1957), and Mark (1962). We celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary in August 2004.

William J. Dess took his Final Flight on 22 May 2015

He received full funeral honors at his funeral -- a three-volley gun tribute, flag folding and presentation, a bugler playing Taps, all courtesy of an eight-person Travis AFB Honor Guard. It was lovely. He was interred with his 39th Bomb Group baseball cap, which he wore all the time
