Crew 11: 1st Replacement

The original crew of Replacement P11, Censored Lady, completed 27 combat missions and 3 Prisoner of War Missions together, except for Cpl Milton Jacobs, the original Tail Gunner, who was lost in action. Upon arriving on Guam, the crew underwent training, including practice missions over Rota, a Japanese-occupied island. During this period, Jacobs and Co-Pilot James R. Little were reassigned. Jacobs joined Crew 16, which was tragically lost on May 4, 1945, during the Oita mission. Little, however, returned safely. James Ogilvie, who replaced Jacobs as Tail Gunner, joined Replacement Crew 11. On May 29, during a daylight strike on Yokohama, the crew faced intense flak but successfully hit their target. They encountered and protected a mortally damaged bomber from enemy fighters, shooting down one and assisting in rescuing its crew. On the return trip, they also escorted a second crippled B-29 back to base. For their bravery and airmanship, Replacement Crew 11 was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, as noted in GO 53 Section XV, dated September 4, 1945.
